I'm Deb Smallwood,
I spent 45 years inside the system. Then I named it — and created a path forward.
I am Deb Smallwood — a woman executive, researcher, author, and founder of SelfPowerment.
For more than four decades I held senior leadership roles at Liberty Mutual, KPMG, and ICW Group. I know what it means to deliver at the highest levels. To be the person everyone depends on. To exceed every expectation and still feel like something is quietly, persistently off.
That feeling became a question I could not stop asking.
Not just about advancement. About something deeper — the moment a high-achieving woman looks in the mirror and barely recognizes herself. The moment success stops feeling like success. The moment she realizes she has been so focused on proving her worth to everyone around her that she has forgotten her own.
I spent two years trying to understand that moment.
Sixty-two narrative interviews with senior leaders — 52 women and 10 men — across industries and generations. Five hundred hours of conversation. And a pattern so consistent across every story that it had to be named.
That research became the Invisible Advancement Cycle — the hidden system that quietly determines who becomes indispensable without becoming visible.
And it became SelfPowerment.
Not a self-help platform. Not a confidence program. A research-backed framework built from my lived experience and the honest stories of senior leaders — organized around four Principles and designed to give high-achieving women the path from endurance to alignment. From proving to owning. From asking will they choose me — to knowing I choose this.
The book is published. The white paper is free. The programs are running. The community is here.
I am also a keynote speaker, podcast guest, and executive advisor to women leaders and organizations across Fortune 500 companies and startups.
And in the best moments of my life — I am a wife of 49 years, a mother to two incredible daughters, and Yiayia to four grandchildren who remind me every day what it means to live fully, joyfully, and from the inside out.
SelfPowerment...
The Research is Personal
This research did not begin in a library. It began in conversations—with women who had done everything right and still felt something was off. Women who were indispensable and invisible at the same time. Women who had never been able to name what they were living.
These are some of them. They shaped this work from the beginning—asking harder questions, challenging inherited narratives, and leading with courage and clarity. They are the reason this research exists.
And they are the reason it matters—not just for us, but for every woman who comes after us. Our daughters. Our granddaughters. The generations who will lead the organizations we are building today.
The shift starts with us.
